Farm order and delivery software for direct sales, compared

Restaurants want a price list and terms, households want a share and a pickup time, and both want the order right. Here is how eight farm ordering tools compare, and what they cost at your volume.

In short

  • Wholesale buyers need price lists and invoices on terms; households need shares and pickup. Few tools do both equally well.
  • Fees come three ways: a monthly plan, a share of your sales, or an extra percentage on payments.
  • None of the eight say they take orders by text message, which is how many restaurant orders still arrive.

Start with how orders arrive today

Before comparing tools, count a normal week: how many orders came by text, by email, by voicemail and at the market. A tool that only takes online orders still leaves the texts to retype. Our guide Direct-sales orders, from text message to delivery run maps that week from first message to invoice.

What it costs at $10,000 a month

Fees work differently, so put them on the same sales. At $10,000 a month in online orders, using each company's listed rates and before the 30¢ per card payment:

  • Local Line Core: $109 plus 2.9% on cards, about $399.
  • Barn2Door Business, billed yearly: $159 plus 2.9% on cards plus a 2% merchant support fee (its rate between $100,000 and $250,000 a year in sales), about $649.
  • Farmigo: 2% of delivery revenue, $200, with card processing not published separately.
  • CSAware: 2% of delivery revenue, $200, with card processing not published.

Payment by bank transfer (ACH) costs less on several of these; Local Line lists 0.6% to 1%.

Notes on each

Local Line

One inventory for retail, wholesale and CSA, with a storefront per price list, net-30 invoices, live pick lists and route exports. Its own site says it is more than you need for one cash market stand.

Barn2Door

A hands-on store with coaching, a point of sale and subscriptions on every plan. Note the setup fee and the merchant support fee in its seller FAQ, and that your store and data go when you cancel.

GrazeCart

Wholesale and retail pricing groups, recurring orders and a farm-store point of sale; only the entry plan's price is published.

Farmigo

CSA and herdshare management priced as a share of delivery revenue, billed only in months you deliver, with pack lists and stop sequencing.

CSAware

From LocalHarvest: CSA boxes built automatically for each member, a wholesale catalog with buyer terms, and route planning through OptimoRoute. Priced as a share of revenue.

Tend

Crop planning with orders and a store built in, so availability comes straight from the plan. Inexpensive, and labeled beta.

Farmbrite

Record keeping first, with orders and pick lists on its higher plans.

Square

A strong market-stand point of sale with invoices and running balances, but nothing farm-specific such as shares or harvest availability.

Where Kavalo fits

Not one of these tools says it takes an order sent by text, and many restaurant orders still arrive that way. Kavalo Front Office handles the conversations: every text, call and form in one customer list, a text back to every missed call, AI chat, reminders, invoices and online payments; AI Ranch Hand answers the phone. Availability from the field as stock, pick and pack lists and delivery runs are not part of Front Office; White Glove sets those up, or pair Front Office with one of the stores above.

Questions people ask

Can members pause a share or change pickup?

Ask before you buy: share holds and pickup changes are where CSA tools differ, and members will ask in the first month.

Can I record cash and checks?

Barn2Door describes cash or check on delivery and Square keeps running balances. Ask the others how an offline payment is marked paid.

Does it work with my Square reader?

Local Line and Tend connect to Square; Barn2Door and GrazeCart have their own point of sale.

Can I try it first?

Local Line offers 7 days, Farmbrite 14 days and Tend a free plan; Farmigo and CSAware offer demos.

Is it worth it for one market stand?

Probably not yet. Start when orders come from more than one place, or when wholesale buyers want invoices on terms.
