Equine and ambulatory vet practice software, compared

An equine practice works from the truck: a barn with eight horses and four owners, no signal, and an invoice that has to be right. Here is how eight practice systems handle the farm call.

In short

  • Offline use and splitting one horse's bill across owners separate these systems more than anything else.
  • Listed prices run from $89 a month for a solo vet to a $6,000 implementation plus monthly fees for a large hospital.
  • Client texting and portals are uneven: several say they have none, so the calls still land on the vet's phone.

What an equine practice asks of software

A 2026 survey of more than 200 equine vets by The Equine Practice Company asked which one capability matters most. Mobile and ambulatory use came first at 38%, then ease of use at 25%, offline access at 9% and price at 7%. Vets described treating several horses at one barn, keeping a record for each horse, dividing the travel charge and sending invoices to different owners, and many still produce a separate invoice for every horse.

Notes on each

StableTrack

Equine only and built around the phone: schedule by location with drive time, ambulatory routes, full offline use on iPhone and iPad, and per-owner and percentage splits with barn invoicing. One flat practice price with unlimited users.

EDSI VMS

Built for exact split-ownership billing, one invoice per owner, with texting included. It says plainly it has no client portal and no lab integrations, and that the full app needs a connection.

ThoroVet

Ambulatory equine work on an iPad that works offline, with multiple owners by percentage and invoices by text. Billing runs through QuickBooks Online, which you need. Its pricing page and home page list different prices; ask for a quote.

Cassadol

For solo and mobile equine vets, with invoices and payments in the field and lab connections. Offline mode is an add-on; clinic plans are listed as coming soon.

HVMS

For equine hospitals and practices with three or more vets: a site license, a fee per vet, a $6,000 implementation and paid add-ons such as texting. Implementation takes six to eight weeks.

DaySmart Vet

Cloud software for all species with an equine and mobile page, online requests, texting and a client app. It needs a connection except for records downloaded ahead of the visit.

ezyVet

Multi-species cloud software configured for large-animal practices, with an offline mobile app and ownership tracking across owners and sites. Price on request.

Covetrus Impromed Equine

An established ambulatory system with an offline laptop edition, splits by percentage, one invoice for many horses by stable or trainer, and automated texts, email and voice reminders. Price on request.

How to choose

  1. Bill your hardest barn in the demo. One farm call, eight horses, four owners, one travel charge. Ask for the invoices it produces.
  2. Turn off the signal. Ask what must be downloaded beforehand and what happens to edits made offline on two devices.
  3. Add up the real cost. Implementation, data conversion, per-vet fees, offline and texting add-ons, and how many staff accounts are included.
  4. Ask how clients reach you. If the system has no portal or texting, owners keep calling your cell.

Where Kavalo fits

Practice software runs the medicine and the bill. It rarely answers the phone at 9 at night or tells an owner when the truck will arrive. Kavalo Front Office covers that side: a booking page for routine work, a customer list, reminders by text and email, text-to-pay invoices and a text back to every missed call; AI Ranch Hand answers calls with your approved answers and sends emergencies straight to a person. Horse records, farm-call rounds, charges split by owner, truck and clinic stock and the link to your practice software are not part of Front Office; White Glove sets those connections up. Our guide to rounds and farm calls shows how the day fits together.
